Christian Wück was satisfied with the first game of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. But then he was bothered by one word.
Kim Steinke reports from Dresden
For the German women’s national team, the start of the World Cup qualification was a perfect start. From the point of view of DFB captain Giulia Gwinn and Co. it was 5-0 against group opponents Slovenia. “We started very well in both halves and brought in a lot of energy,” the Bayern player explained on ARD after the final whistle in Dresden. Shortly afterwards, the national coach answered journalists’ questions at the press conference – and a strange exchange of words ensued.
Christian Wück first spoke about the game, he was generally satisfied with his team’s performance: “We made things clear pretty quickly and improved in the second half.” Later, a Sky reporter asked him about Nicole Anyomi, who was not used against Slovenia, and Gwinn and Jule Brand, who were both substituted at half-time.
The reporter wanted to know whether Wück had decided this for reasons of “load control”. The 52-year-old gave a bizarre answer. “That’s a bad word. Load control,” said Wück. After a short pause, he added: “You can’t put that in your mouth.” The reporter replied: “Aren’t you allowed? That’s my favorite word.” Afterwards, both the reporters present and Wück had to laugh out loud.
The national coach did not want to reveal why “load control” was a “bad word”. However, the ex-professional explained that players like Gwinn and Franziska Kett from FC Bayern, who were also substituted after 45 minutes, would receive a lot of playing time at their club.
Wück’s focus is already on the second qualifying game on Saturday. Then Germany meets Norway. The national coach and his team want to score the next three points against the Scandinavians on the way to the World Cup in Brazil.
