The behavior of quite a few Manchester United players during their games with Newcastle United and Chelsea has resulted in the club being fined. In total, the club of manager Erik ten Hag has to pay 93,000 euros to the English football association FA.
The first fine, of about 50,000 euros, was the result of wild protests against the referee in the game against Newcastle United (0-0). Cristiano Ronaldo thought to score in that match at the beginning of the second half. He took the ball before Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope could take a free kick. Ronaldo thought the free kick had already been taken, because defender Fabian Schär had played the ball to his keeper with a small tap. Referee Craig Pawson disallowed the goal, much to the anger of many United players who came to redress.
Check out the footage of the incident below:
Ten Hag said afterwards that it was all not too bad as far as he was concerned. “I don’t think the protests were too intense,” said de Tukker. ,,But I don’t know exactly what happened on the field, because it was too far from me. I’ve seen the footage and the Newcastle player clearly touched the ball. The players wanted to make that clear to the referee.
,,I want to make it clear that we always accept the decision of a referee. But it is also quite normal to ask why at that moment. It was a curious incident and then as a team you ask for a reason. But in the end, of course, you have to accept it. Then you must continue.”
Chelsea
The second penalty, from the game against Chelsea (1-1), was the result of the dissatisfaction after the ball hit the spot because Scott McTominay held his opponent Armando Broja very showy. Again the players attacked the arbiter and that went too far in the eyes of the FA.
United have now admitted that it failed to ensure proper behavior by the players, according to the Football Association.
