Mario Götze didn’t let the gag take him away. When he was on vacation in Mallorca in mid-June, he happened to be staying in the same hotel as the club officials of Eintracht Frankfurt’s upcoming opponent RB Leipzig.
Götze, goal scorer for the German national team’s World Cup triumph in Brazil in 2014, did not yet have a new club.
He actually assumed that he would meet “secretly, quietly” with Eintracht’s sports director Markus Krösche. “But by no means! Nobody could have guessed that Leipzig would do their season analysis in the same hotel on that day,” Götze told the “Bild”.
Leipzig’s commercial manager Florian Scholz said he should burst into the room with RB coach Domenico Tedesco and surprise him.
He did that and “introduced me to him as a newcomer. It was a bit like “Understand fun” with me as a decoy. Domenico Tedesco’s face was worth it. I won’t forget his look anytime soon,” said Götze.
Just under a week after the gag, the 30-year-old signed with Eintracht Frankfurt.
