Curfew hinders Andy Murray, Botic van de Zandsculp breaks negative spiral, no stunt Gijs Brouwer | Wimbledon

with summaryA downer for Andy Murray. The Scot was in good shape against Stefanos Tsitsipas, but the match was canceled due to the curfew that applies at Wimbledon. He needs one more set to reach the next round.

The curfew is in place at Wimbeldon to take the environment into account. Therefore, all parties must stop at 11 p.m. local time. At the time of the stoppage, the game had already lasted almost three hours and Murray was leading 6-7 (3) 7-6 (2) 6-4 against Tsitsipas, the number five on the seed list. So he is one set away from a stunt.

Earlier in the day, the Norwegian Casper Ruud and Liam Broady played a five-setter that lasted almost three and a half hours and the Briton won. As a result, the program on the center court ran out.

This afternoon, Murray, who won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, and Tsitsipas continue.

Second round Botic van de Zandschulp after five setter

Botic van de Zandschulp has reached the second round of Wimbledon by beating Chinese Zhang Zhizhen in five sets: 2-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2. For the number 44 in the world, it was his first victory since April 22 and also his first victory since the collaboration with coach Sven Groeneveld. Gijs Brouwer did not make it. Alexander Zverev was too strong in three sets.

After 4 hours and 1 minute, Van de Zandschulp used his second game point, on the service of Zhang. The Chinese concluded the game with a volley into the net.

Zhang had the better of the game in the opening phase and Van de Zandschulp was searching for a long time on court 6 at Wimbledon. The Dutchman looked insecure and handed in his service game no fewer than three times in the first set. He hit five double faults in the opening set.

In the second set, Van de Zandschulp trailed 4-1 and an easy victory for Zhang seemed in the making. However, Van de Zandschulp started to serve better and better, lowered his burden of errors and saw to it that Zhang started making more mistakes.

Van de Zandschulp won the second set via a tiebreak and took the third set in the same way. In the tiebreak of the third set, he lost a 6-3 lead, but he still took two points in a row at 6-6.

In the fifth set, Van de Zandschulp took a 3-0 lead and he never gave up that lead. He won a total of only one point more than the number 52 in the world: 168 to 167.

The 27-year-old Van de Zandschulp reached the final of the ATP tournament in Munich in April and then lost five times in the first round. He was also hampered by a foot injury, which forced him to cancel the Rosmalen grass tournament.

In the second round, Van de Zandschulp will face Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated Frenchman Arthur Fils in three sets earlier in the day.

Last year, Van de Zandschulp reached the fourth round in London. He then lost to Rafael Nadal.

Gijs Brouwer down

Gijs Brouwer was unable to provide a stunt at Wimbledon. The debutant on the London grass lost in the opening round in three sets to the German Alexander Zverev, who is seeded nineteenth. It became 4-6, 6-7 (4) 6-7 (5).

Brouwer got two set points on Zverev’s service in the second set with a 6-5 lead. On his first set point, the Dutchman just hit a return, on his second he slipped during a rally.

The 26-year-old Zverev closed the game with an ace, his twentieth in total. The German did not give up his service game once during the entire match, Brouwer only did that once.

Brouwer started well on Court 1, the second stadium of Wimbledon. The number 3 in the Netherlands won his first service games convincingly, while Zverev regularly needed his service to avoid getting into trouble. The North Holland debutant hardly seemed to suffer from nerves.

Brouwer managed to force a tiebreak twice, but the former number 2 in the world was there when it really had to. Zverev won 115 points in the game of 2 hours and 15 minutes, compared to 105 for Brouwer.

Postponed by rain

The game between Zverev and Brouwer was supposed to be played on Tuesday, but the rain made that impossible. The game was scheduled on court 3 on Tuesday, on court 2 on Wednesday and on Court 1 on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Brouwer, who won three matches in the qualifications last week, played his third match ever in the main draw of a grand slam. Last year, the number 160 in the world reached the second round of the US Open.

In the run-up to Wimbledon, Brouwer had lost nine matches in a row. Zverev has never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon. He reached the final at the US Open in 2020. He was a semi-finalist at the last three editions of Roland Garros.

Yesterday Tallon Greek track was eliminated in the first round by Márton Fucsovics. As a result, Van de Zandschulp now has to uphold the Dutch honor on his own. Among the women, no Dutch player managed to reach the main tournament.

From the Sand Scallop – Zhang: 2-6, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2

Brewer – Zverev: 4-6, 6-7, 6-7

Haase and Middelkoop immediately eliminated
Robin Haase and Matwé Middelkoop both did not get further than the first round of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon. The Dutch doubles specialists both had to recognize their superior in a placed couple. Haase (36) lost together with the Austrian Philipp Oswald 6-7 (4) 6-4 6-4 against the Brazilian Marcelo Melo and the Australian John Peers. Melo and Peers are placed sixteenth.

Earlier in the day, Middelkoop (39) and Brazilian Marcelo did not make it against Croatians Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. It became 7-6 (5) 6-4 for the numbers 9 of the placement list.

Rosalie van der Hoek managed to reach the second round in the women’s doubles alongside the American Lauren Davis. Van der Hoek and Davis were 6-4 6-0 too strong for Alexandra Krunic from Serbia and the Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski.
