Cup on the field in Waalwijk: the first game after the winter break has been postponed

The first match in the Eredivisie of 2024, the match between RKC Waalwijk and Heracles Almelo, was temporarily stopped after 36 minutes in the first half. Referee Rob Dieperink made that decision in Waalwijk because cups of beer were thrown onto the field from the audience. In the end it became 1-2 for the away team.

The beer was thrown after Heracles had taken a 0-1 lead following a penalty kick from Emil Hansson. The players from both clubs left the field.

Penalties
After a delay of about ten minutes, they returned and the match resumed. RKC also received a penalty in the second half. After intervention by the VAR, who had seen that a shot by Julian Lelieveld had grazed Hansson’s arm.

Michiel Kramer scored the penalty to make it 1-1 for the home club. Heracles responded almost immediately with a headed goal from Mario Engels: 1-2. RKC then came dangerously close to the equalizer a number of times, but the excellent goalkeeper Michael Brouwer prevented it.

Measure against fan violence
The rules of the KNVB prescribe that a match is stopped if objects are thrown onto the field from the stands. It is a measure against fan violence in professional football.
