Wessel Been can now be called ‘the cup hero of AFC’. The player from the Amsterdam amateur club scored the only goal in the cup match against RKAV Volendam (0-1) tonight. He also did this a round earlier against PEC Zwolle (1-0). The victory puts AFC in the third round of the KNVB Cup.
Despite the bad weather, 2,500 tickets were sold for the cup showdown between the amateurs of Volendam and AFC. The home team moved to the stadium of the paid brother FC Volendam, as the club’s own lighting installation is not of the required quality. In the previous round, Volendam also played in the stadium and defeated the third division team Eemdijk: 5-0.

Second division team AFC performed a stunt in that round by eliminating PEC Zwolle 1-0. Both amateur teams kept each other in balance in terms of chances and position before half time. Volendammer Eric Veerman headed just wide of the AFC goal from a corner and Melvin Platje shot wide from a promising position on the other side. The striker played in familiar territory: from 2007 to 2011 he was under contract with FC Volendam.

Platje also caused the first danger after the break. This time his shot was tapped wide by goalkeeper Dion Vlak. Been, who was the match winner against PEC, came on after 58 minutes. He repaid the confidence of AFC coach Benno Nihom within five minutes by shooting the 0-1 against the ropes. It caused great joy among the visitors.

AFC’s lead did not bring peace to the Amsterdam team. On the contrary, Volendam became more dangerous. Although that was mainly through corners, where the wind was also an important factor. AFC was bending a lot, but not cracking. Although Patrick Plugboer had a good chance, he shot the ball straight at AFC goalkeeper Gijs van Zetten from outside the sixteen.
AFC will be tense in front of the TV on Thursday evening when the draw for the third round of the KNVB Cup takes place around 11:30 PM.
