Striker Serhou Guirassy reached the quarter-finals with Guinea at the 34th Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). In the round of the best 16, the team led by the top scorer from Bundesliga soccer club VfB Stuttgart beat the surprise team Equatorial Guinea 1-0 (0-0) after a last-minute goal.
In the quarter-finals, Guinea will face the Democratic Republic of Congo, who surprisingly knocked record winners Egypt out of the tournament 8-7 after a penalty shootout. After 90 minutes and extra time the score was 1:1 (1:1).
After a goalless first half, Equatorial Guinea’s Federico Bikoro was shown a red card for serious foul play (55′). But even with one player less, the outsider had a great chance to take the lead – but Emilio Nsue shot a penalty kick onto the post according to video evidence (68th). In the eighth minute of injury time, Guinea’s Mohamed Bayo decided the game with a header.
Meschack Elia (37th) scored the 1-0 win against Egypt. The favorite, again without the injured star striker Mohamed Salah, countered before the break with a penalty kick from Mostafa Mohamed (45th + 1). In extra time, the Egyptian Mohamed Hamdi saw yellow-red (97th), and the underdog then held his nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout.
