Cup | Gensheimer’s satisfaction: “A lot falls off”

Uwe Gensheimer stood exhausted in front of the microphones, the seven-meter drama had also left its mark on the experienced left winger of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen. “It just feels good. A lot falls off,” said the former national team captain and blew through.

The triumph in the DHB Cup – it was also a salvation for Gensheimer. The veteran took part in the Final Four with the lions for the tenth time, and the 36-year-old was able to lift the silver trophy for the first time. “It’s a satisfaction for me to finally be able to do that,” he admitted.

The premiere of the Final Four in Cologne was also Gensheimer’s premiere. He missed the only cup win of the lions five years ago until Sunday evening: between 2016 and 2019 the club icon played for Paris St. Germain, also won national titles there – but at the same time missed a championship and the first cup win for Mannheim.

For the right-hander, who remained without a title in the Lanxess Arena even in his two Final Four appearances in the Champions League with PSG, things came full circle in Cologne. “It was a huge battle of wills. I’m super proud,” said Gensheimer, at 36:34 after a seven-meter throw against SC Magdeburg with nine goals, the best thrower for the lions.

There was no doubt a hint of relief in his words. Because despite his many goals, Gensheimer also showed weaknesses in the final. In the extension, he missed two seven meters and a free throw from the outside. “I didn’t manage to put the lid on it,” he admitted.

It was therefore impressive that Gensheimer made the first attempt at the showdown from the line – and converted it coolly. “The coach said I should take the first one,” said Gensheimer, laughing. When Albin Lagergren made the triumph a little later, tears flowed: “I just slumped.”
