State Secretary Uslu (Culture and Media) and the public entities of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba (Caribbean Netherlands) have concluded a culture covenant. In it, they agree that they will jointly take responsibility for the cultural infrastructure in the Caribbean Netherlands. The parties want to bring about a change towards a more sustainable cultural policy and put the basics in order.
This will be done through cooperation in the field of cultural education, participation, investments in libraries and by improving the accessibility of cultural funds. Special attention is paid to the shared cultural heritage and the slavery past.
The next step is that the European Netherlands and the Caribbean Netherlands will further elaborate the agreements in the covenant in so-called island culture agendas. The parties therefore make concrete agreements about goals to be achieved and involve the local communities and culture makers. This culture covenant is a starting signal for further cooperation.
