In order to breathe new life into the cultural life of the media city after two years of sighing under the corona crisis, a brand new festival has been set up: OPEN035. The event is a one-day festival in which the cultural and artistic sector of Hilversum presents itself to the public. For free, visitors can enjoy live music, a roller disco and a photo exhibition at various locations in the center of Hilversum.

According to the festival’s coordinator, Herman Dummer, the festival has already been successful because of the close collaboration between the various cultural institutions in Hilversum. “That happened much less in the past,” said Dummer. “In addition, I speak of a success if I see many people walking around today with a big smile on their face.”
“A good idea for such a festival because everything is a bit on its ass”
When there is a soundcheck on the stage at the Kerkbrink, several interested parties already take their seats for the concert by, among others, Jawa Manla, which is about to start. “Good idea, this festival”, said an elderly lady. “Because everything is a bit on its ass. It is currently very quiet.” Another visitor is also enthusiastic. “I’ve only been living in Hilversum for a year and I’m in favor of everything that presents itself here in the cultural field. So it’s very nice to walk around here today.”
Town hall on fire
One of the highlights of the festival will take place in the evening when the town hall will be set ablaze. “The story of architect Dudoc is told there by means of video mapping, who, of course, also designed the town hall,” says Dummer. “And furthermore, a number of pop acts will perform on the main stage at Kerbrink tonight.” The older lady likes it. “We’re going to see what we come across,” she says. “Just walk in everywhere, like you do at a festival.”
