The voice of the Millerntor is dead: Rainer Wulff died of cancer at the age of 79. His club, FC St. Pauli, mourns the loss of his longtime stadium announcer.
Second division FC St. Pauli mourns the loss of its long-time stadium announcer Rainer Wulff. The former NDR radio editor died on Wednesday at the age of 79 from cancer, as the club announced.
More than just a stadium announcer
The man who launched an initiative against the mispronunciation of player names and who preferred to receive “guests” rather than “opponents” enjoyed the highest reputation. For example in the Hamburger Abendblatt or the Kieler Nachrichten, which praised him in the highest tones as early as 2014. “With his passionate, but never artificial tone, he still stands out pleasantly from his blatant colleagues in other arenas,” says the newspaper.
From 1986 to 2017, Wulff sat at the microphone in the speaker booth at the Millerntor Stadium. Previously he was a radio journalist, author, presenter and opera connoisseur. The FC publicly mourns the deceased and expresses condolences to his relatives.
