A mistake when extinguishing a mini fire during roof work has major consequences. Almost the entire stock of the neighborhood supermarket on Plein 1945 in Petten has to be destroyed. The products came into contact with extinguishing powder and have become unsaleable. The powder entered the store through a hole in the roof.
“Eighty percent of the store is ready for demolition,” says an excited manager Roger Moonen. It was an insignificant fire that started while repairing roofing materials. The powder used to extinguish the fire directly entered the store through a hole in the roof.

“When I heard it, I immediately knew it was wrong,” says Moonen, who was a firefighter for a while. Not only are all products dusted with the powder unusable, the powder also adheres to printed circuit boards, electrical materials and metal, all of which must be cleaned by specialists.
mega job
The moment of the accident couldn’t be worse, says Moonen. “We are at the beginning of the summer season, the time when we have to earn the most.” He therefore wants to reopen his shop as soon as possible. Saturday morning the store must be clean again and the empty shelves must be filled again.
That is a logistical challenge where all help is welcome. “I can use all the hands, especially to fill the boxes again on Friday,” says Moonen. A call on social media has already resulted in twelve reactions from fellow villagers who want to roll up their sleeves.

More than a supermarket
One of the local residents who was immediately ready was Bob de Groot, who lives across the street from the store and is sweeping in the store. “It’s not just a place where you do your shopping,” Bob says. “You meet so many people – just socialize. It’s more than a supermarket.”
If all goes well, Roger Moonen wants to open the door of his shop again on Saturday morning at 08.00. “Then I’m standing here with a big grin and then it’s party time, absolutely.”
