Bitter news at 1. FC Nürnberg: Marcel Wenig, who only returned to his youth club on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt at the beginning of the week, will be out for months with a serious knee injury. The suspicion that the 19-year-old midfield talent had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee was confirmed on Friday, as the clubbers announced.

Nuremberg’s team doctor Dr. Johannes Rüther had previously explained: “Due to the rather poor imaging of the MRI examination, it is initially a suspicion. Unfortunately, there is a lot to be said that this could become more serious.” Wenig had already left the training camp in Marbella, Spain; the injury occurred in the test match on Wednesday against FC Brugge (0:3).

“I really wanted to take the opportunity to come to the ‘Club’. This step is very special. For me it’s now time to present myself and step on the gas,” Wenig said during his presentation on Monday. For the Nuremberg native, it was a return to his old place of work after training there until 2017. The clubs agreed on a purchase option, which, according to Transfermarkt information, is in the low six-figure range. The former U19 national player is under contract in Frankfurt until 2025.
