Crucchi Gang: “Fellini” (Review & Stream)

What ideas you can have on a convivial evening after a Bob Dylan concert: Francesco Wilking (Die Höchste Eisenbahn), Head of Element Of Crime Sven Regener and music manager Charlotte Goltermann came up with the Crucchi Gang. The concept: German indie musicians sing their pieces in Italo-pop garb, translated with a lot of amore and sensitivity by half-Italian and thoroughbred amateur linguist Wilking. Not always one to one, but in such a way that the soul of the song is illuminated in a charming Italian way.

Fantastico!

On the second Crucchi Gang record, “Fellini” (this time without a contribution from Regener), Wilking himself devotes himself to two German classics: Joachim Witt’s “Goldener Reiter” becomes the cappuccino foam, supported by Marlene Schuen, singer of the South Tyrolean band Ganes – Soul pop piece “Silberner Reiter” – because “Cavaliere d’argento” simply sounds more attractive. Wilking also interprets the finale: Reinhard Mey’s “Good night, friends” is transformed into “Buonanotte amici”, and gender-appropriate it is also called “Buonanotte amiche”, “Good night, friends”. The guitar arrangement of the original version has been upgraded with strings, brass and harmonica.

The Italo-Pop version of “When you went” by Lina Maly is no longer quite as touching as the original, and Dirk von Lowtzow’s pronunciation has the charm of a navigation device on the way to Lago Maggiore. The Morricone-referential implementation of Tocotronic’s “In doubt for the doubt” is one of the highlights of the compilation. Antje Schomaker’s “Wasted Time”, “Tempo sprecato”, also gains considerably in the dignified, cinematic Crucchi-Gang sound. “L’altra metà” stays close to the title track of Tristan Brusch’s album “Am Rest” (2021): a somber ballad with the emotional drama of a Puccini opera, but without the need for opulence. Brusch’s melancholy intensity also shines in Italian. Fantastico!
