Crowds at Meidenmarkt Schoorl, municipality ‘doesn’t count on it’

There has been no question of a really crowded climbing dune for years, but today it is really Meidenmarkt in Schoorl. The traditional ‘love feast’ seems lost. Misbehavior by intoxicated young people and subsequent measures seem to be the death knell for the disorganized ‘eye on the dune’. This year, no additional measures, such as cameras and enforcers, will be deployed.

Many ‘older youngsters’ from the Noord-Holland Noord region once found love during the Meidenmarkt on Whit Monday. According to tradition, the tradition dates back to the 16th century when the ‘farmers, spinners and sluts rolled down the hill’, as a verse from that time describes.

“Flirting and decorating have not happened for years,” said Schoorlaar Joop Muelink rather to NH Nieuws† Muelink is interested in the history of his village, and researched the age-old phenomenon. “Girls’ market has changed a lot.”

“In the past, no drinks were drunk, in recent years an awful lot. It also became much too massive,” says de Schoorlaar in the video below. “We should have kept it ‘between us’.”

The question is whether there will be any crowds on the well-known centrally-ago climbing dune today. Probably not. If there is a meeting at all, it will take place in other places in the dune, reporters from NH Nieuws saw in previous years.

No measures

The municipality also does not expect an influx. “We do not take any specific safety measures in advance for Meidenmarkt. We do not expect large crowds and assume that it will go smoothly,” said a spokesperson.

The forecast weather is also not very much in favor of outdoor activities. The chance of showers is high, with the occasional sun. The temperature is a maximum of 18 degrees.
