Crossing the road in Assen? First wait until Bartje gives the green light

We mainly know Bartje from the TV series from the 1970s and as a bronze-colored landmark behind the Drents Museum. But anyone who dares to cross the street at the intersection of Rolderstraat, Jan Fabricusstraat and Javastraat from this weekend will see a new Bartje. One that turns green or red.

From Saturday, a pedestrian light on the Asser crossing will be equipped with the Bartje lights. The anonymous pedestrian then makes way for the TV icon from Drenthe, who gained national fame for his statement ‘I don’t pray for brown beans!’

The idea for the Bartje traffic light, which will eventually be placed at two forks, was devised by council member Cindy Vorselman (PvdA). According to her, the provincial capital is already making headway in the field of city marketing, but the first Bartje traffic light can give that development an extra boost.
