The groups find each other
Experience shows that not too much will happen on the first two laps. The two Norwegians are running away from the front, behind them more and more groups are coming together who want to get into the race easily and save energy.

Bonus rating after 700 meters
Today, after just 700 meters, you can win bonus seconds for the overall ranking in a sprint classification. The individual times of the starters are used for this purpose. This means that it will only be clear who collects what when all runners have finished.

Vermeulen is struggling
Austria’s top runner Mika Vermeulen, who achieved some strong results at the start of the season, is not yet back to 100% after a break with a cold and starts today as the best ÖSV professional from 38th place. He is already over two minutes behind the top. Vermeulen still wants to make up a few places in free technique. Later the duo of Michael Föttinger and Benjamin Moser, who are close together, start off, both starting almost three minutes behind Valnes.

Switzerland hopes for clover
In Swiss dress, Beda Klee impressed yesterday with his best World Cup result. The 27-year-old finished sixth in the classic individual start and will start today 1:25 minutes behind the top in tenth place. Another top ten result seems possible. Cyril Fähndrich (21/+1:44) and Valerio Grond (27/+1:52) are also in the top 30 overall. Nicola Wigger, Candide Pralong, Roman Schaad, Antonin Savary, Erwan Käser and Janik Riebli follow for Switzerland.

Moch confirms his good form
The first DSV starter today will be Friedrich Moch, who, after a strong seventh place in yesterday’s individual race, will go into the cross-country trail in eleventh place, 1:25 minutes behind Valnes. Follow a little later with Jan Stölben (25th/+1:48 min.), Florian Notz (28/+1:52), Lucas Bögl (30/+1:58) and Anian Sossua (32/+2:00) four more DSV starters who could work together on the track. Marius Kastner (53/+2:40) is the last German to start the race.

Freestyle pursuit over 20 kilometers
The new year begins with a mighty challenge for the athletes. After yesterday’s individual start in the classic technique, today we’ll be covering twice the distance in freestyle. The start is based on the overall ranking. Norwegian Erik Valnes will open the race closely followed by his compatriot Harald Østberg Amundsen at 10 a.m. The American Ben Ogden starts 28 seconds behind the leader, ahead of yesterday’s surprise winner Perttu Hyvärinen from Finland.
