Cross-country skiing: Neprjaewa fends off attacks and wins Tour de Ski – cross-country skiing – winter sports

The best German runner on Tuesday (February 4th, 2022) and in the overall ranking was Katharina Hennig. She was twelfth in the final stage and ninth in the final ranking (+ 3: 21.3 min). After finishing twelfth the day before, Katherine Sauerbrey just missed the second half of the Olympic qualification with position 18.

Attacks only in the final climb

For the first 6.5 kilometers of the race, the 46 remaining starters stayed together for the most part, with the top favorites running right at the front of the field. When the first slight climbs came, Ebba Andersson picked up the pace and started to attack the leader Natalia Neprjaewa. Only the Norwegian Heidi Weng could follow her. Neprjaewa, who was more than a minute ahead of the final, was able to keep the gap within limits.

From the German team, Katharina Hennig and Antonia Fräbel were two and a half kilometers from the finish in the next chasing groups, around 15 and 30 seconds behind.

Fräbel has to pay tribute to Tempo

Even through the steepest part of the route with almost 30 percent incline, Neprjaewa fought much better than in the previous year, although Weng and Andersson moved a little further at the top, but the overall victory was not in danger.

Further back in the field, Fräbel had to pay tribute to the high pace and fell back, while Hennig crossed the finish line in twelfth place.

National coach Schlickenrieder with praise

We can be very satisfied“, explained national coach Peter Schlickenrieder in ZDF. He particularly praised the fighting performance of the athletes.

Sauerbrey was 19th overall (+6: 15.0 min), Sofie Krehl finished the Tour de Ski in 26th (+ 8: 01.2 min). Pia Fink, Lisa Lohmann and Fräbel ended up in ranks 30 to 32.
