13:28
Burman and Niskanen collision
Jens Burman almost fell in the transition zone. He collides with Niskanen, who is about to turn into his box. As a result, the Swede loses a few seconds and has to shake off the shock first.
13:25
Halfvarsson in front
The leaders now go to the transition zone together. Who can make the change the quickest? Calle Halfvarsson is the first to come back over the lap mark. The athletes still have two laps to complete.
13:25
Klæbo has to fight
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo found himself at the end of the penalty field, but was able to make up places on the downhill. He is now fourth behind his teammates. Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget is currently setting the pace.
13:23
Vermeulen and Kuchler together
Mika Vermeulen and Albert Kuchler have teamed up as a duo. Both are a little over 30 seconds behind. Just one more reminder. Kuchler has already strapped on his second pair of skis.
13:22
Eleven cross-country skiers
Eleven cross-country skiers have set themselves apart at the front. At the bottom of the group is Federico Pellegrino, who has struggled at times to remain part of the leading group. Frenchman Theo Schely surprisingly came in ninth. Schely is better known for his sprinter qualities.
13:20
Poromaa in front
William Poromaa has now taken pity and is leading the race for the first time that day. Behind him, he feels Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget on the back of his neck. Didrik Tønseth is also positioned well.
13:14
Niskanen can play again
The Finn Niskanen is in front again, but the leadership work doesn’t seem entirely voluntary. The Norwegians seem to be taking a short breather. William Poromaa is also up front, but doesn’t want the top position.
13:13
Task Hyvarines
Perrtu Hyvarinen celebrates on the final lap. His deficit is very large at almost three minutes and so he animates the audience. As he transitions into the fifth lap, he unbuckles his treadmill and ends the competition.
13:12
Tactical move
That could have been a very clever move by Albert Kuchler. He was the only athlete from the leading group who changed his skis. He is now 20 seconds behind the group. It usually takes around 16 seconds to change skis. If everyone goes to the transition zone in the next round, the German could be the winner.
13:09
The first ski changes are coming up
Strong performance from the German! Albert Kuchler struggled and closed the gap to the front again. There are only six seconds between him and the leader Didrik Tønseth. At the transition to the fifth lap, however, he turns into the transition area and gets a pair of new skis. Jonas Dobler also decides to make the change.
13:06
German runners split up
Mika Vermeulen can still hold on to the end of the group around Kuchler. Meanwhile, Jonas Dobler finds himself a little further behind. In the second chasing group, he is eight seconds behind his team-mate. The two Swiss are already a long way behind with a minute and a half each.
13:04
Almost half the distance covered
Paal Golberg continues to provide leadership. Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget and Swede William Poromaa are the first pursuers. A small gap has opened up in front of Albert Kuchler, who is currently in 14th place. Kuchler still looks fresh enough to possibly close the gap again.
13:00
Showdown begins
More and more gaps are slowly opening up in the main field. Even Emil Iversen can no longer keep up. 18 seconds lie between him and his leading compatriot Golberg. Iversen is currently not in the form to defend his title.
12:53
30 athletes
In the meantime, the fourth round has started. Paal Golberg leads the field with Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget behind him. Furthermore, there are 30 athletes who are still within reach to the front.
12:50 p.m
Swiss can’t keep up
The Austrian Mika Vermeulen can keep up with the increase in pace. He has placed himself behind the two Germans and is currently in 16th place. Beda Klee and Jonas Baumann are still at the bottom of the peloton. They are only defensive and have to try to watch themselves. In front of the two there is a gap of ten seconds to the French Manificat.
12:46 p.m
13.5 kilometers completed
The Finn Iivo Niskanen has taken the lead and now wants to sift out the field a bit. He picks up the pace on the climb and one or the other has to leave a gap. Where there was just less than eight seconds to rank 34, the gap is now a little more than 22 seconds.
12:44
Snow is getting wetter
The weather conditions have changed a bit compared to this morning. It was still pretty cold when we walked in, so the route was very fast. Meanwhile, the sun is coming out more and more and the snow is getting wetter. So far, only one Argentine has made use of the ski change that all athletes are entitled to.
12:40 p.m
Comfortable on the go
The main field of 34 cross-country skiers is getting closer together again. The speed doesn’t seem to be too high yet and so there are just 7.6 seconds between the first Calle Halfvarsson and the 34th Beda Klee.
12:35 p.m
Third round begins
The third round has started. The second lap had already been completed faster than the first. There’s a new leader for that. Swede Calle Halfvarsson points Pellegrino and Klæbo to their positions.
12:32
Main field is getting smaller
The field at the front gets a little smaller from time measurement to time measurement. Meanwhile, 34 cross-country skiers can keep up with the pace. The other athletes have to keep tearing down. The two Germans Kuchler and Dobler are still in the main draw. Just like the Swiss.
12:30 p.m
First warning
Esteve Altimiras has received a warning. He broke out of the classic technique. Nothing will happen to him yet. If he did that a second time in this race, he would be given a yellow card.
12:28
The followers
Who runs behind the leading nation? William Poromaa and Federico Pellegrino are level. The Austrian Mika Vermeulen has worked his way up to eleventh place.
12:26
Norway in front
It is not surprising that the next Norwegian has taken the lead. This time it’s Didrik Tønseth who leads a Norwegian quartet. He is followed by Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Paal Golberg and Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget. Emil Iversen, the defending champion, is a little further back in twelfth place.
12:21
Fall of Jonas Dobler
That is bitter! Jonas Dobler found his way to the front, but then it happened. In the downhill curve before the time measurement at kilometer 7.1, he puts too much pressure on the inner ski. So it knocks him out of the curve and he loses a lot of places. He returns to the field in 34th place.
12:20 p.m
Task Miha Simenc
The Slovenian Miha Simenc has already given up the race. It was not clear why, but he will not finish the race.
12:19
The field remains large
The cross-country skiers go into the second round together. The first athletes have to tear something at the back, but 42 men still stay together within 11 seconds.
12:17
First round almost done
Paal Golberg now takes the lead at the end of the first lap. He has the two Italians de Fabiani and Pellegrino in tow. Jonas Dobler runs in seventh place.
12:15 p.m
More placements
The two Swiss Baumann and Klee are still close. In positions 30 and 32, they are ten seconds behind the leader. Young Vermeulen sorted himself into 21st place.
12:13
Dobler positions itself well
Jonas Dobler oriented himself to the front in the initial phase. He can be found between De Fabiani and Pellegrino in eighth place. Albert Kuchler is in 41st place.
12:10 p.m
Tempo comes from Andorra
The cross-country skiers have to complete seven laps. At the moment all athletes are still on the first lap. Irineu Esteve Altimiras from Andorra is currently setting the pace at 3.4 kilometers.
12:06
Norwegian double leadership
The field will probably stay close together for a long time. The Italian Pellegrino ended up in seventh position. Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo are currently leading the field.
12:04
Only 49 athletes
In the end, only 49 cross-country skiers started in this last competition. Kaarel Kasper Korge and Nail Bashmakov could not compete.
12:02
Italians in the lead
The Italian Federico Pellegrino doesn’t want to leave anything to chance and takes the lead after 900 meters. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo sticks to his ski ends.
12:01
The starting shot has been fired
A total of 51 men from 22 nations are ready. The starting shot has been fired and off we go! Everyone gets away well and now it’s a matter of finding his position around the field.
11:56
Sjur Røthe not at the start
The message just came in that there will be a name change for the Norwegians. Sjur Røthe is replaced by Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget. He takes over starting number five from his compatriot.
11:52
The Swiss and Austrians are more likely to be found in the middle
The Swiss also start with a duo. Beda Klee and Jonas Baumann both want to achieve a good result, but if everything goes normally they won’t be able to fight for the top places. Mika Vermeulen is the only Austrian cross-country skier at the start. So far, however, the 23-year-old can look back on national successes and will use the race to gain more experience.
11:43
Germans only in the outsider role
For Germany, Jonas Dobler and Albert Kuchler dare to approach the marathon discipline. However, neither of them can be expected to place in the front. However, both cross-country skiers were also part of the relay that sensationally won a bronze medal at this year’s World Championships. For the first time since the 2011 World Championships in Oslo, they won a World Championship medal, when there was also bronze in the relay. Such a result can unleash unimagined powers. Who knows? Perhaps there will be the next sensation among the German cross-country skiers.
11:33
Who could make life difficult for the Norwegians?
Above all, the Swede William Poromaa has a good chance of winning a medal. However, he has fallen short of his own expectations in the past two weeks. With his “middle finger scandal” he also made more headlines off the track than on it. The Italian Federico Pellegrino showed at the Tour de Ski that he can be dangerous not only in freestyle, but also in the classic style.
11:18
Norway in the role of favourites
For cross-country skiers, the 50 km mass start in classic style is the last competition at the Noric World Ski Championships. In the marathon discipline, the Norwegian men are the big favorites again. So far there have been five medal decisions and in all disciplines a Norwegian or the entire team has been at the top. The all-rounder Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo and his teammate Paal Golberg are hot contenders for the title. But Didrik Tønseth, Sjur Røthe and Emil Iversen should not be underestimated on a good day either. Iversen won the gold medal in the 50 km mass start race at the 2021 Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf.
