Crocodile gives birth without a male: is such an ‘immaculate conception’ good for an animal? And can this also be done in humans?

Scientists have for the first time observed a ‘virgin birth’ in a crocodile. In Costa Rica, a female crocodile laid eggs without the involvement of a male. An interesting discovery for science, but is it good or bad news for the animals themselves? And is it also possible with man, such an immaculate conception? Biologist Sterrin Smalbrugge explains. “It is precisely thanks to the mix with a male with different genes that youngsters are resistant to all kinds of diseases.”
