Criticism of Jumbo World Cup advertising: commercial shows construction workers rushing

A TV commercial from the supermarket chain Jumbo in Veghel can count on a lot of criticism on Wednesday. The advertisement full of celebrities promotes an orange jersey for the World Cup in Qatar, but also shows hustling construction workers.

The commercial, which more or less serves as a music clip, has been online since Tuesday evening and will also be broadcast on TV. In Jumbo’s advertising, several construction workers pass by, including hopping on a construction site.

Qatar
Qatar has been criticized for years for its human rights violations and its treatment of guest workers, more than 6,000 of whom have died in recent years, according to research by the British newspaper The Guardian.

There were also casualties in the construction of World Cup stadiums. The Gulf state government says the situation has improved.

Comments
The comments under the Jumbo commercial have been disabled on YouTube. People can comment on Facebook and there is raining the criticism.

“How many of you people have read the plans for this ad, how many worked on the execution? And was there really no one at all who said cautiously, dancing construction workers at this dead-slave World Cup, maybe that’s not the world’s best idea?” , says one of them.

“6500 construction workers dead. Many go home penniless and Jumbo advertises with hustling construction workers. How inappropriate do you want it,” adds another.
