Criticism of Downing Street: Race to succeed Johnson paralyzes politics

LONDON (dpa-AFX) – In view of the drastic increase in the cost of living, criticism of the British government, which is busy running the race to succeed Johnson, is becoming louder. The industry association CBI (Confederation of British Industry) called on the Conservative government on Monday to present plans now as to how households can be relieved.

“The Prime Minister and Treasury Secretary should use the next few weeks to get a handle on the looming crisis,” CBI Director-General Tony Danker said on Monday.

Foreign Minister Liz Truss and ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak are currently in a duel for the post at the head of the government. Until September 5, the members of the Tory party should decide which of the two will succeed Boris Johnson. Important decisions should not be made until then.

Former Labor Prime Minister Gordon Brown (2007-2010) made similar comments. He spoke out in favor of a meeting of the national crisis team Cobra in order to cushion the further increase in the energy price cap expected for early October with an emergency budget. “We should convince households and companies – like Germany is already doing

– to reduce their energy consumption wherever possible by one

prevent formal rationing,” Brown said, according to the PA news agency.

Scotland’s Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon also called on the government in London to act. She called for a meeting of British heads of government planned for September to be held this week.

According to Bank of England forecasts, Britain will have to adjust to an inflation rate of 13 percent by autumn. British households are particularly affected by energy prices./cmy/DP/jha
