Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo has thanked rival Liverpool fans for their support following the death of his newborn son. “Thank you Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.
It was the first post on social media since Liverpool beat United 4-0 in the North West Derbyin which the superstar was missing due to the stroke of fate.
In the seventh minute of the game, the fans of the “Reds” rose from their seats together with those of ManUnited and applauded for 60 seconds. They also sang the legendary Liverpool anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
Klopp feels for Ronaldo
“That was my moment of the game”, had Liverpool team manager Jurgen Klopp said: “The fans showed great class there. There are so many things in life that are much more important than football, we feel for Cristiano and his family.”
Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez informed the public about the loss of their newborn son on Monday evening. While a girl was born safe, her twin brother died at or shortly after birth.
Thursday evening, Ronaldo posted again on Instagram – this time a picture with his family after arriving home, showing his newborn daughter for the first time. Below he thanked his fans, writing verbatim: “Home sweet home. Gio and our baby girl are finally together with us. We want to thank everyone for all the kind words and gestures. Your support is very important and we all felt the love and respect that you have for our family. Now it’s time to be grateful for the life that we’ve just welcomed into this world.”
