Crisis shelter in Zeelandhallen: temporarily four hundred extra places for asylum seekers | Inland

The municipality of Goes will receive four hundred extra asylum seekers in the Zeelandhallen. This will take place until September 20, for the time being. The first ones will arrive this weekend.

Under the heading of ’emergency shelter’, 320 asylum seekers are already being accommodated in the Zeelandhallen. That housing was extended last week until next year. The arrival of the new group is even more urgent: it is called crisis relief. This type of care does not initially last much longer than a week, but can be extended. The measure should immediately reduce the need in the Ter Apel application center. According to B and W in Goes, they are responding to ‘an urgent request from State Secretary Eric van den Burg’.

No people from safe countries

According to mayor Margo Mulder, “a number of hard conditions have been set to guarantee the safety of our residents and asylum seekers.” For example, it remains in force that no people from safe countries are received, nor refugees who are registered as ‘nuisance causes’.

According to Mulder, there is enough space in the Zeelandhallen to create four hundred extra places. It is up to the COA to set it up. That organization seemed to get a stab at the current asylum seekers in the Zeelandhallen last month. A pamphlet was distributed in which they would complain about lack of privacy, and the quality of food, sanitary facilities and air conditioning. According to Mulder, however, it has since become clear that that letter did not come from the residents. Nevertheless, the COA promised that more showers and better beds would be delivered.

Planned events in the Zeelandhallen can continue as usual, according to the municipality of Goes.
