It was one of the biggest Hollywood excitement of recent years: because comedian Chris Rock made fun of Will Smith’s wife Jada during the Oscars on Sunday (March 27), he gave him a good slap in the face on the open stage. It has now become public how those responsible behind the scenes reacted: there was probably a crisis meeting just seconds after the incident – in which, among other things, the option of banning Smith from the hall was discussed.
Also behind the scenes one stood in the fog at first
The actor’s press secretary, Meredith O’Sullivan Wasson, stormed into a private room with Academy CEO Dawn Hudson, Oscar producer Will Packer, and Academy President David Rubin in a frantic and serious manner to discuss next steps. “There was a suspicion that something was wrong with Will,” according to an unnamed source to People magazine. Even behind the scenes, it was initially not clear “whether it was a stunt”.
“Back and forth about what should happen to Will”
Once officials realized Smith’s attack was deadly serious, there was “a back-and-forth about what to do with Will,” according to a purported insider US Weekly magazine revealed. The possibility of referring Smith to the award ceremony was also seriously considered by the Oscar makers. “The reason Will was allowed to stay was because Chris was already backstage and there was no risk of them meeting again,” it said.
Will Smith’s spokeswoman wrote a new speech – Chris Rock took off
Even before Smith tearfully accepted his Oscar, his press secretary tried to calm him down during every commercial break – and allegedly even helped him rewrite his acceptance speech apologizing for his violent outburst at the Academy.
Meanwhile, several employees took care of the slapped Chris Rock. He was “shocked” when he left the stage – but had repeatedly protested that he was fine. Later, the 57-year-old left the award ceremony as quickly as possible.
