Crisis emergency shelter Enkhuizen will open its doors tomorrow for 225 asylum seekers from Bergen

The last dots are being put on the i, because tomorrow the first asylum seekers are expected at the temporary crisis emergency shelter on Sluisweg in Enkhuizen. The North Holland North Safety Region has made the Zuiderzee Museum car park suitable for temporary accommodation for a maximum of 225 people until 15 March at the latest.

Crisis emergency shelters for 225 asylum seekers will be set up in the parking lot of the Zuiderzee Museum on Sluisweg from 1 December to 15 March at the latest – NH Nieuws

The shelter is necessary because there is not enough room at the application center in Ter Apel for people who are looking for safety and protection in the Netherlands. As a result, men, women and children often have to stay outside the center in unsuitable conditions in the open air or spend the night on a chair in a waiting room.

“You don’t really want anyone to have to spend the night here, but it’s better than sleeping outside”

Eduard van Zuijlen, mayor of Enkhuizen

“That is of course terrible,” says mayor van Zuijlen, who came to take a look at the crisis emergency shelter in his municipality for the first time today. “For what it can be, a crisis emergency shelter, it’s very nice, but for what it can be. Because you don’t really want anyone to have to spend the night here, but it’s better than sleeping outside.”

To put away

Because the crisis emergency shelter in Bergen will close its doors tomorrow, the asylum seekers will be transferred from Bergen to the new crisis emergency shelter in Enkhuizen tomorrow.

“These people come from Syria and Eritrea, for example,” explains Richard Dorenbos of the North Holland North Security Region. “In any case, they are people who come from war zones and not from the safe countries.”

Pavilion

The pavilion is divided into different areas. For example, there is a large auditorium, the sanitary facilities are divided by gender and visitors sleep with a maximum of four per person in a room.

Despite the fact that the pavilion consists of thin walls, Dorenbos does not expect that the temperatures inside will not be warm enough for visitors. “We have enough heat pumps and if it doesn’t work out at some point, we can possibly switch to larger diesel heaters. Only at temperatures of -10 degrees and very strong gusts of wind do I expect that visitors will no longer be able to cope.”

Temporary place

The parking lot of the Zuiderzee Museum must be available again for visitors to the outdoor museum in March 2023. So that means that the emergency shelter is available up to that period.

If crisis emergency shelter is still needed in the region from March, another municipality will have to take over from Enkhuizen.
