Criscito moves to Toronto FC – follows compatriot Insigne

After relegation with Genoa CFC

After Lorenzo Insigne (31), Toronto FC have unveiled another well-known signing in Domenico Criscito (35). As the MLS club announced, the defender signed a contract until the end of 2023. Criscito was last active for four years at Genoa CFC, which ended the past season in Serie A with German coach Alexander Blessin as relegated. The former Italy international featured in 21 games, in which he contributed seven goals and one assist.

Criscito was originally under contract in Genoa until next year, but recently canceled his contract. “I want to make it clear that I was open to staying in Serie B, but I wasn’t part of the project anymore. I was offered to remain as director of the club, but I didn’t want to end my career,” the veteran said recently in an interview with “Il Secolo XIX”. For him, Canada is the second foreign post in his career, in which he played for Zenit St. Petersburg between 2011 and 2018.

“I had offers from Italy, also from Serie B, but I didn’t want to play against my heart club. That’s why I accepted to go to Toronto. Everyone says it was just for economic reasons, but that’s not true. I don’t have a higher salary than in Genoa,” said Criscito.
