Finns’ phone numbers have recently been used in nuisance and scam calls. Several dozen announcements have been made.
In fake calls, the caller pretends to be from technical support, for example, and asks to install a remote connection program on the computer. Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom’s cyber security center report about the matter.
According to the Cybersecurity Center, using a Finnish number is a more reliable way to reach the victim than calling from a foreign number. However, most calls are made in English. A fraudster can pose as a bank customer service representative.
– The caller’s urgency about the matter and asking for personal information or bank IDs can reveal the fraudulent nature of the call, reminds the Cybersecurity Center’s information security expert Niclas Koskinen.
How to act
The Cybersecurity Center reminds that if you suspect that your phone number has ended up in the hands of scammers, you should primarily contact the operator managing the subscription.
You should also not call back a call received from a foreign phone number. Callers may try to reach the victim several times in a row, increasing the need to call the number back. Callback costs can end up in the criminals’ pockets.
Victims of scam calls should also check their devices for possible malware, contact the bank and report the incident to the police.
