Crimes in the family. The Lorys Stival casethe docuseries

Realized by Stefano Nazzijournalist and highly followed author of podcasts dedicated to crime news, the documentary opens on Santa Croce Camerina, small town in the province of Ragusa where in 2014 Veronica Panarello, her husband Davide Stival and their two children Lorys and Diego lived (apparently happily).

And where in the early afternoon of November 29 Veronica goes to the police station to file a missing person report. His eldest son, 8-year-old Lorys, is no longer to be found. She claims to have accompanied him to school but that she didn’t see him come out when she went to pick him up. The teachers, however, deny the child’s presence in the institute.

In the meantime a hunter calls the police: he has found the body of a child in a drainage ditch on the extreme outskirts of Santa Croce Camerina. It’s actually Lorys.

The arrest of Veronica Panarello

About a week after the body was found, Mom Veronica is investigated by the police for murder and concealment of a body. According to the autopsy Lorys he would have died between 8.30 and 10 by strangulation via cable ties of plastic. At the same time, thanks to surveillance cameras present in the vicinity of the Stival house, it turns out that the woman left the front door with her two children, and a few moments later Lorys returned alone. Followed later by the mother. For the police there are no doubts: the culprit is Veronica.

For almost a year, the woman continues to declare herself a complete stranger to the incident, to reiterate that he had left his son near the school that day. Only after long months of imprisonment, Veronica makes the first admissions, declaring that, while she was busy washing clothes in the bathroom, her son, playing with electrician’s cable ties, strangled himself. Then he changes his story again, this time pointing the finger at his paternal grandfather Andrea Stival.

Veronica reports being entertained a clandestine relationship with his father-in-law, and that Lorys would have discovered and threatened to tell everything to her father Davide. For this reason his grandfather would have killed him. A version that does not convince the investigators. On 17 October 2016, at the end of a dramatic trial, Veronica Panarello was sentenced to 30 years in prison for murder.

The next episode of Crimes in the family

The last appointment of the documentary cycle is dedicated to the incredible story that pertains to protagonist Ferdinando Carretta. Boy from the province of Parma who at the age of 27 (we are in 1989) he killed his father, mother and younger brother. Carretta escaped to the United Kingdom for a few months lives undisturbed in London for about ten years, until a crew of the program Who has seen? he goes to the English capital to interview him and ask him if he wants to launch an appeal to continue the investigations.

When the troupe drove by the journalist Giuseppe Rinaldi arrives at Carretta’s house, here’s the surprise: the man confesses candidly that he exterminated his family. And without mincing words he says: «I held that firearm and I shot my parents and my brother». Brought back to Italy, he comes to trial declared incapable of understanding and will and sentenced to detention in a judicial psychiatric prison. Ferdinando Carretta returned to freedom in 2015 died in May 2023 in Forlì.
