Crevits wants to make Flanders a pioneer in early detection of vulnerabilities in children | Interior

Flemish Minister of Welfare Hilde Crevits (CD&V) wants to focus more on the knowledge, awareness and skills surrounding negative experiences and traumas in childhood in order to limit the impact of psychological, social or physical problems later in life. She announced this today in De Zevende Dag (One).

The King Baudouin Foundation is tasked with making aid and care providers in all 60 primary care zones in Flanders and Brussels aware of the importance of a child’s first years of life in their daily work. Research shows that those early years can have an impact on problems later in life and that early detection can yield many benefits in terms of health care and participation in society.

Minister Crevits provides 5 million euros for the dissemination of expertise and the provision of concrete tools. “Flanders is definitely taking on a pioneering role worldwide. Together with Scotland, we are the only ones that are now concretely working on this in policy. By helping children and their parents at an early stage and detecting vulnerabilities, we can take care of many concerns later in life Concerns that require much more specialized help later in life,” she explains in a statement.

Awareness and expertise

According to her, our society and our healthcare system need more awareness and expertise: “The first step is to provide concrete tools and support to healthcare partners within our primary care zones. We provide 5 million euros for this. It will require a major change of mentality to reduce the impact on longer term, but the result is more than worth it,” continues Minister Crevits.

Until 2025, the King Baudouin Foundation will be tasked with ensuring that aid and care providers in all 60 primary care zones in Flanders and Brussels deal more with the negative experiences or traumas (ACEs or Adverse Childhood Experiences) in the daily work. environment of a child, such as stress due to a divorce or sudden changes within the family, but also an unhealthy living environment or addiction problems in parents such as alcohol and drugs.
