Creator of popular board game Catan passed away | Abroad

Klaus Teuber, creator of the popular board game Catan, has died at the age of 70. The German was seriously ill and died after a short illness. Kosmos, the publisher of the German-language game, reports this.

Teuber is described by Kosmos as a “great game designer” who has “enthused millions of people worldwide in more than forty countries with his many award-winning games”. His most famous game is Catan from 1995, which also received expansion sets and an online version due to its unprecedented success.

Catan was voted toy of the year in 1999 and is still widely played, also in Belgium. Players try to take the island of Catan and collect points by, for example, building villages and cities. The first player to collect ten points wins the game.

The parlor game was initially released as The Settlers of Catan, but the name was changed in 2014. Four years later, a spokesman for manufacturer 999 Games acknowledged that the term ‘settlers’ had acquired too much of a bad taste. “But we also wanted to expand and protect the brand internationally,” the company added.
