Creator of news photo of the year still goes to the front lines every day to give a face to war horror: these are his most gripping stories

While the Russians insisted at the start of the invasion that they only hit military targets, Ukrainian photojournalist Evgeny Maloletka (36) detailed the horrors of war in encircled Mariupol. For example, on March 9, 2022, he took the photo of the heavily pregnant Iryna being carried away from the destroyed maternity hospital – now voted news photo of the year. Two days later he had to flee himself, because the Russians started to hunt him. Nevertheless, Maloletka continued to move towards the front lines. “What matters to me is that I can show the world what is really happening.”
