Qhis evening up Channel 5 at 21.20 it goes on the air Crazy & Rich first free-to-air TV. A very funny, loud and colorful love comedy set in Singapore and Malaysia. Made in 2018 with an all-Asian cast, it was a huge worldwide box office hit. And it lends itself well to a late summer home evening.
Crazy & Rich: the plot
Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), a Chinese professor of economics of American origin in New York, accompanies her Malaysian boyfriend to Singapore Nick Young (Henry Golding) to participate in the his best friend’s wedding. She is very excited: it is her first trip to the Asian city, where she will meet her boyfriend’s family for the first time.
Arrived at Singapore, the girl discovers that Nick has avoided giving her some details about himself and his origins: he is in fact the descendant of one of the most important families in the country and is one of the most coveted bachelors. Rachel, a simple New Yorker with humble origins, becomes the target of the very jealous and very envious local girls, first of all Nick’s exes, decided to send the poor girl back to New York. She also targets Nick’s mother-to-be (Michelle Yeoh, Oscar 2022 award for the film Everything Everywhere All at Once), That he does not approve of his son’s sentimental choice. For the protagonist, the journey therefore becomes an uphill journey.

Crazy & Rich: a contemporary Cinderella
Shot between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, Malaysia, and Singapore, Crazy & Rich is a contemporary fairy tale that gives a lot of space to Singapore, with its ultra-luxury gilded palaces and villas, Asian traditions and skyscrapers. It is a noisy film, full of group dances, with various extravagant characters, in which tradition and individualism, heart movements and family rules are opposed, insane richness and simplicity.
We laugh (a lot) and cry (a little, but we do) in a story that may appear trivial (a super current Cinderella, like many others), but which is able to really entertain. After the film you find yourself with a sense of reassurance and a smile on your lips. It’s not little.
