287 days after his cardiac arrest at the European Football Championship, Christian Eriksen has celebrated a fairytale comeback in the Danish national team.
Less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute, the 30-year-old scored in the 2: 4 (1: 3) in Amsterdam against the Netherlands with a shot in the corner (47th).
But it wasn’t enough to win because Stefan Bergwijn (16th/71st), Nathan Ake (29th) and Memphis Depay (37th, penalty kick) were successful for Oranje in the first World Cup test.
Former Bundesliga professional Jannik Vestergaard (20′) made it 1-1 in the meantime. Eriksen also hit the ball against the post (74′).
No health concerns for Christian Eriksen
Eriksen, who had been fitted with a defibrillator, only made his Premier League comeback at FC Brentford in mid-February. He no longer has health concerns.
“Obviously I wouldn’t come back if I didn’t know I was able to come back without anything bad happening to me,” Eriksen had said. “Everything is fine to be able to play again.”
Because of a corona infection and quarantine in England, he was late in joining the team of the European Championship semi-finalists.
Eriksen collapsed on June 12 in Denmark’s first group game of the European Championship in Copenhagen against Finland and had to be resuscitated. He narrowly escaped death.
