Schumacher crashed during qualifying at a speed of around 270 km/h and the impact the German driver suffered was 33G, or thirty-three times his own body weight. The car was very badly damaged and the Haas Formula 1 team now faces the difficult task of rebuilding the car for the next race in Australia.
Team boss Guenther Steiner said that the damage to Schumacher’s car is indeed considerable, but that the chassis appears to be reusable.
“The chassis itself does not appear to be broken,” said Steiner. “The structure that is supposed to absorb a side impact is, but it is replaceable. Of course we will have to inspect the chassis thoroughly, but it doesn’t look too bad.”
The invoice for all damage is estimated at almost $1 million, which is obviously much less good news for the F1 team, especially when you also know that the teams have to stick to a budget cap of 140 million dollars.
