Crafting Fashion for Possible Futures at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York

The Austrian Cultural Forum New York opened the exhibition ‘Crafting Fashion for Possible Futures’ in June. The exhibition gives an insight into Austria’s contemporary fashion design and presents various designers and labels whose work expresses the potential for change inherent in fashion. The question is “What can design really do here and now?” in the foreground. Themes such as identity politics, activism, sustainability or the interdependence of traditional production processes and new technologies are explored in the works and in the exhibition.

Even if the creative expressions of the exhibited designers and labels differ from each other, they all have one thing in common: they want to initiate change through their work. “Their actions not only create garments and textile artefacts, but also a social fabric full of optimism, solidarity and hope,” writes the Austrian Fashion Association in a statement.
