Coventry City can stay in their own stadium

The English second division soccer team Coventry City has fended off a ban from their stadium.

The club said they agreed on a new five-year deal with stadium owner Frasers Group on Friday. “This agreement will help create a period of further stability as we continue to build a positive future for Coventry City Football Club,” said club owner Doug King.

The company had issued an eviction notice to City in December after the club turned down a new contract for financial reasons. Frasers Group acquired the stadium, which is named Coventry Building Society Arena after a sponsor, in November.

Rise within reach

Due to a lack of lease agreements, Coventry has had to move to other stadiums several times: the club played in Birmingham between 2019 and 2021. With the agreement, the club is now hoping for momentum for the final games of the season.

With five games to play, the Sky Blues are currently in fifth place, which entitles them to play in the relegation matches for promotion to the Premier League. For Coventry that would mean a return to the elite league after 22 years.
