“I’m overjoyed,” said winner Kotut in the NDR interview. “I really liked the atmosphere here, I would love to come back.” The Kenyan can look forward to the winner’s prize of 25,000 euros and an additional record prize of 15,000 euros.
Yehualaw with outstanding debut
Yehualaw can also look forward to a total of 40,000 euros. The 10-kilometer world record holder (29:14 minutes) from Ethiopia made an amazing debut in the Hanseatic city. With 2:17:23 hours, she stayed more than three minutes under the previous best time of her compatriot Meselech Melkamu (2:21:54) from 2016. “I’m very happy, the course was great and the spectators were fantastic,” said Yehualaw.
Grote: “The day everyone has been waiting for”
In fantastic weather on Sunday morning, not only the professionals but also thousands of amateur runners tackled the route across the Hanseatic city. After a reduced 35th edition last year due to Corona, thousands of spectators again lined the streets of the Hanseatic city at the 36th Hamburg Marathon and loudly cheered on the runners.
“This is the day everyone has been waiting for after two years of the pandemic. It is also a signal for the whole city: normality is back.”
— Sports Senator Andy Grote (SPD)
Just over 29,000 participants had registered for the different routes, including around 10,600 starters for the marathon.
The Hamburg Marathon is the first major spectator event in the Hanseatic city since March 2020 without major corona restrictions. However, all runners must be vaccinated or recovered.
