Coup at the start of the season – Charles Leclerc ends Ferrari dry spell

The Monegasque wins the Bahrain Grand Prix and sends a signal right at the start of the season. World champion Max Verstappen experiences a tragic race – and Mick Schumacher is unlucky.

What a start to the season for Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1: Charles Leclerc won the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday: second was his teammate Carlos Sainz, third was record champion Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes. World champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull was three laps before the end after a defect.

The Monegasse Leclerc has also ended a long dry spell for the Italians – the last time a Ferrari won was in September 2019, when Sebastian Vettel prevailed in Singapore.

In a thrilling race at the start of 2022, Ferrari confirmed the strong impressions from the first training sessions. Haas driver Mick Schumacher finished eleventh and could hope for points at times. Shortly after the start, the 22-year-old spun and fell far behind. Nico Hülkenberg, the substitute at Aston Martin for Sebastian Vettel, who was suffering from corona, finished 17th in his first Grand Prix appearance in 17 months.
