The Environment Minister: Inside, the controversial per- and polyfluorinated chemicals want to better research Pfas. The ministers were determined in a decision in a decision in the Saarland Mettlach Orcholz.
Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAs) are contained in everyday products such as textiles, cosmetics and food packaging. Depending on the fabric, they survive in the environment for a long time and are also called eternal crop chemicals. They can get more and more accumulated.
Coordination office should collect knowledge
The creation of a national action plan was decided, said Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Minister Katrin Eder (Greens). For this purpose, the establishment of a nationwide interdisciplinary PFAS coordination office is required to collect and evaluate findings.
PFAS is a “highly problematic group of pollutants that increasingly presents us with challenges,” said Eder. You have to know more and measure more. A nationwide PFAS campaign plan should also take into account the pension entitlement for the population.
Greenpeace for PfAS ban
Greenpeace demands quick action to contain the harmful chemicals. “Pfas can already be found almost everywhere from sea foam to human blood,” says Greenpeace’s ecotoxicologist, Julios Kontchou. The use of PFAs is prohibited without any ifs and buts.
If the Environment Minister now only requested further research, then they delayed effective steps against these substances. Danish authorities, for example, warned their population about contact with sea foam, said Kontchou.
