Council of State postpones decision on thousands of homes under roaring aircraft engines

The Council of State needs more time to make a decision on the plan to build 2,500 student homes and 1,500 short-term homes in the Kronenburg district in Amstelveen. Homeless students and the city council are eager for the homes, but the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W) does not think it is a healthy place to live.

This has everything to do with the noise of airplanes that fly low in this area. The ministry leaves during the seat on 15 February they want to adhere strictly to the Schiphol Airport Layout Decree (LIB). In it, Kronenburg is designated as an area where no houses may be built.

“The decision is to protect residents around the airport in terms of health and against noise. This is not a healthy place to live,” said the ministry.

Students think this is nonsense. Especially because the Uilenstede student campus is located right next to the designated spot in Kronenburg. The students who live there are even more bothered by the parties than by the planes, they say.

protest march

“Students are currently fighting for good and affordable housing. The concerns have never been so great,” said student housing provider DUWO on behalf of the students. On the day of the hearing, a group of students walked a protest march

The Municipality of Amstelveen hopes that an exception can be made, because ‘we now really have to do something about the housing shortage’, but the Council of State needs more time to investigate whether it is responsible for students to live in this place. . The ruling period has been extended by six weeks.
