Council invests 1 million in development of ‘Assen Centraal’

Assen can get to work with the inner-city development plan ‘Assen Centraal’. The council has agreed with 1 million euros in preparation costs for this plan for 1,350 homes in the center area.

It concerns houses in the three sub-areas Inner City, City Boulevard and Havenkwartier, all of which are connected because they are located in the center. The aim is to have 850 houses built within ten years.

60 million public money

The ‘Assen Centraal’ plan costs 350 million, of which about 60 million in public money is needed, because otherwise it will not get off the ground. The province has pledged EUR 4.55 million from the Regions Fund. Assen still hopes for a substantial government contribution from the pot for the National Housing Impulse.

In the city center it is mainly retail properties that are being transformed into houses, such as in the ‘t Forum shopping center and the former V&D building. It should solve the store vacancy. About 500 homes will be built here.

City boulevard as a link

Housing is also being built on the edges of the Veemarktplein, along the Industrieweg. This ties in with the new central Asselyn district, which is currently being built on the north side of the Veemarktterrein. Assen wants to turn this area along the Industrieweg into a so-called city boulevard, which runs all the way to the station area. This boulevard forms the link between the center and the new Havenkwartier, with hundreds of homes around the Havenkade.
