Andrei Coubis has chosen Italy. The captain of Milan Primavera, one of the protagonists of the Youth League semi-final he just won against Atletico, said yes to Carmine Nunziata’s Italy Under 20. The 19-year-old central defender has been called up in the blue shirt for the matches against Germany and Norway, scheduled for 23 and 27 March.

Coubis was born in Milan to Romanian parents and has a double passport, so after a few appearances in the Romanian youth selections – including the last one with the Under 21 team in September – he went straight to the FIGC to talk about his future: playing with the ‘Italy. In December, the current Romania coach Edward Iordanescu also spoke about it, in a resigned tone: “There is the risk of losing him, he grew up elsewhere and has a different mentality. I’ve put it on my list, in November we were close to getting it accepted, but now it’s time to put things in order. I don’t think it’s right to make someone’s debut in a hurry just for the risk of not losing them. I don’t want to deceive anyone.” Coubis scored once in 21 games this year and led Milan to the semi-finals of the Youth League for the first time in history. In April the Rossoneri will face Croatian side Hajduk Split. Andrei will be in central defense as always. With Italy finally in destiny.
