S.It has been exactly 10 years since the Costa Concordia ship sank off the island of Giglio. And tonight, to give a detailed analysis of the tragedy, comes the Italian-German documentary Costa Concordia: Chronicle of an announced disaster: broadcast at 9.25pm on Rai 2. Jointing of archive material (unpublished), new interviews and filmed reconstructions.
The focus, of course, is onformer commander Francesco Schettinoheld responsible – also after the trial – of having caused disaster with reckless maneuvers and choices.
Costa Concordia: what happened on 13 January 2012
It’s 9.45pm when the Costa Concordia hits a rock in front of the island of GiglioTuscany. The ship had left about two hours earlier from Civitavecchia, bound for Savona, with on board just over 4,000 passengers and crew. At 6:57 pm, at the height of the Argentario promontory, the Concordia abandons the route to Savona and heads towards the island of Giglio.
Commander Schettino, wants to “bow” in front of the houses of Giglio Porto. A maneuver that brings the ship as close as possible to the coastin homage to the master on board of Gigliese origins.
But something is not going as it should. Just 160 meters from the coast the helmsman, misinterpreting the commander’s orders, hits an underwater rock with one wrong turn. The impact causes a gash 70 meters long. A flaw so big that it could contain, in abundance, the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
The death toll is 32. But what exactly happened on that fateful night, how could such an accident happen?
The investigation of the documentary
The story of this Italian-German co-production and with several voices, with the points of view of the passengers, the crew, the rescuers and the inhabitants of the island. United at original Coast Guard recordings, amateur passenger videos and exclusive interviews to protagonists and witnesses. To then get a complete picture using the documents of the process, of what happened on board and during the rescue.
The voices of the survivors
Among the dramatic stories of the passengers: that of Giuseppe Miccoli, who desperately fought for a place in one of the lifeboatsto then lead her ashore because the crew was incapable of lighthouse; and the desperate attempt to Matthias Hanke and Marcel Zuhn to save two German compatriots, then dispersed.
Not missing Gregorio De Falcolucid coordinator of aid and protagonist of the famous phone call to Schettino, where he ordered him to return on board after unjustified abandonment of the ship.
The trial and sentencing of Schettino
In 2013 the Grosseto prosecutor opened an investigation against Schettino and his officers on the bridge. The version provided by the suspects does not in fact convince the magistrates; black box and recordings of the conversations belie it. Mashed potato witnesses tell another version. Including the most infamous for Schettino, that is of abandoning ship with too many lives to save on board.
After three degrees of judgmentthe sentence for the commander was equal to 16 years in prison. Who is serving in the Rebibbia prisonwhere he follows university courses in law and journalism. The other officers acquitted.
