“Cosmic Dragon”: Universe greetings for Maradona

Great honor for the late football legend Diego Maradona: fans of the Argentine superstar can now send messages to their idol – into space. Since Saturday, a private company has been collecting audio and video messages to be sent into space on the Cosmic Dragon satellite.

The campaign and the name of the satellite go back to an anecdote from June 22, 1986: when the Argentine captain Maradona dribbled around half the English team in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Mexico and then scored his “goal of the century”, a sports journalist from Uruguay called out in the Aztec Stadium his radio microphone: “You cosmic dragon, what planet are you from?”

A few days later, Maradona won the title with Argentina in the final against Germany (3:2) and finally became a world star. In the game against the Three Lions, “Dieguito” also scored irregularly with what he called the “Hand of God”.

Messages from fans will be collected on a hard drive over several months and later sent into space via satellite along with a pair of Maradona’s shoes. The exact start time of the campaign is still open.
