Corsican nationalist Colonna died in hospital | Abroad

The incident surrounding Colonna’s prison assault sparked days of rioting on the island in the Mediterranean. Dozens of police officers and protesters were injured. Protesters were angry that the French authorities had not transferred him to a prison in Corsica against his request.

The French judiciary had previously suspended the life sentence he was serving for the murder of the governor of Corsica in 1998 for medical reasons.
