It is an insane European Championship for handball goalkeeper coach Gerrie Eijlers. De Volendammer became second goalkeeper after Dennis Schellekens tested positive for corona. This morning Eijlers tested positive and on Friday the other goalkeeper, Bart Ravensbergen, also had a positive test.
Eijlers decided two years ago to stop playing handball and became a goalkeeper coach. Because Schellekens tested positive for corona this week, Eijlers second goalkeeper and got playing time against France.
Due to all the infections among the keepers, Thijs van Leeuwen and René de Knegt (HV Aalsmeer) have been called up as replacements. In addition to Eijlers, national coach Erlingur Richardsson also tested positive for corona this morning, increasing the list of infections to eight people.
Victory over Montenegro
Without the infected Eijlers, the handball players won 34-30 against Montenegro. It is the first victory for men in the main round at the European Championship in Budapest. The break was reached 18-16, in the second half the Netherlands did not let things get exciting. The victory is partly due to the flown in goalkeepers Van Leeuwen and De Knegt.
