VfL announced this decision on Saturday. The DFB Cup winners had planned a nine-day stay in Faro from next Wednesday. But due to the rapidly increasing Corona numbers in Portugal, VfL will not make the trip.
Incidence in Portugal at 1,750
The seven-day incidence in Portugal was 1,750 on January 7, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, the “tightened hygiene measures in the team hotel had a negative impact on the training camp”, explained the association.
“Now the case has arisen that we can no longer take responsibility for the stay in Portugal due to the very dynamic pandemic development on site. There is therefore no alternative to cancellation, but of course it is also very regrettable,” said Ralf Kellermann, Sports Director of VfL Women. Instead, the team will prepare for the rest of the lap on the home training ground.
First game of the year on January 29th
Wolfsburg is third in the Bundesliga, two points behind champions and leaders Bayern Munich. VfL still has a game to catch up at Turbine Potsdam, which is due to take place on January 29th.
