On Sunday, the national health authorities counted about 11,700 new corona infections in 24 hours. One week ago there were only 3,700. The number of new cases rose sharply on the islands of Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, among others.
Crete and the Attica region, including the Greek capital Athens, were also affected, as were the South Aegean islands of Mykonos, Rhodes, Kos and Paros. On the positive side, the intensive care units are not burdened more heavily, despite the increasing number of infections.
Greece abolished most corona measures at the start of the tourist season in May. There are still exceptions in the health sector and on public transport.
