Corona situation in Berlin’s critical infrastructure is coming to a head

During the Charité visit by the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (43, SPD) at the end of December, the low level of sick leave among the clinic staff was highlighted. Now Omikron makes itself felt.

Three weeks ago, seven percent of nursing staff and four percent of doctors called in sick.

Now it says: “We are noticing an increasing number of employees who have to go into isolation or quarantine,” says Charité spokesman Markus Heggen. He did not want to reveal the exact sick leave.

Kasia Leszek (31), bank clerk from Wedding: “More and more people in my company are being tested positive. But most colleagues are or were sick for a day at most because they don't feel bad. You continue to work from the home office. Only in the office itself do you notice that it is getting emptier.” (Photo: Charles Yunck)

► At the fire brigade, 173 of the 6,000 employees are infected, 157 are in quarantine. A pandemic level is only declared if 15 percent of the staff is absent.

Frank Scholz (63), heating engineer from Lichtenberg: “We have about 30 employees in our company and at least ten of them are in quarantine. Now I have to do more assignments or do work alone that is intended for two. Unfortunately, our work is not possible from home.” (Photo: Charles Yunck)

► This already applies to the police – 881 colleagues are currently absent there.

Sanela Simi (41), forwarding clerk from Mitte: “In my industry, it has been possible to work from home since the beginning of the pandemic. As a result, sick leave is very low because contacts can be kept to a minimum.” (Photo: Charles Yunck)

Giffey on the BZ: “At the moment we only have a ‘green’ in our critical infrastructure for the water supply and telecommunications, so no impairment.”
